Pool Pump Care Tips For New Owners

Blog

If you're new to having a pool on your property, you may not know what the best practices are to keep your pump running the way that it should be. Unfortunately, this can lead to inadvertent poor decisions that ultimately damage or destroy the pump. Here are a few things that every new pool owner should know to avoid damaging their pool pump.

Be Mindful Of The Temperatures

The ambient temperature outside is a serious concern for your pool pump. If you live in an area where the temperatures drop below freezing, you need to be attentive to the condition of your pump. Remember that water expands when it freezes, so if the water freezes in your pool pump, it's going to crack seals and cause damage. You can avoid this by keeping the pump running so that water is cycling through it at all times. However, if the temperatures are going to be below freezing for a prolonged period, you need to winterize the pump. That means shutting the system down and draining it completely so that it doesn't freeze.

Place The Pump Carefully

When you choose the placement for your pool pump, you need to consider a couple of things. First, make sure that you're putting it in an area that drains well so that you don't have water pooling from rain or other issues. Second, make sure it's not placed anywhere that will put the pump motor at risk of being submerged under water. If the motor gets submerged, it will flood it and likely cause permanent damage, if not destroy it completely. Talk with your pool pump installation technician about the best place to put it so that you don't risk this problem.

Never Run The Pump Dry

When you run a pool pump without any water actually circulating through it, that's called a dry pump. This can cause the pump itself to overheat, can blow the seals in the system, and more. For that reason, it's essential that you monitor the water level in your pool on a regular basis. If it starts to drop, add water so that your pump never runs dry. Always prime the pump before you start running the system, especially if you've backflushed the filters and drained the system for maintenance. Monitor the pump for any air leaks or other issues as well, because these things can disrupt the water flow to the system.
